Corporate universities: an emerging actor in higher education in Spain?
Corporate universities are a growing phenomenon in present-day Spanish society. The study objectives were to identify certain aspects of corporate universities’ future evolution (their role in Spanish society, their organisational changes and the challenges posed by ICTs) and to perform a prospective analysis of their relationships with traditional universities (comparative strengths and weaknesses, and future means of collaboration). The research technique used was the Delphi method, applied to a panel of experts formed by the heads of Spanish corporate universities. Besides collecting data on the above-mentioned study objectives, the results confirmed the important role that corporate universities would play in training and knowledge management within the framework of Spanish higher education, even though the participating specialists believed that they would become a complement rather than a direct competitor to traditional universities.
Corporate universities are a growing phenomenon in present-day Spanish society. Automatic methods for predicting functionally important residues
Sequence analysis is often the first guide for the prediction of residues in a protein family that may have functional significance. A few methods have been proposed which use the division of protein families into subfamilies in the search for those positions that could have some functional significance for the whole family, but at the same time which exhibit the specificity of each subfamily (“Tree-determinant residues”). However, there are still many unsolved questions like the best division of a protein family into subfamilies, or the accurate detection of sequence variation patterns characteristic of different subfamilies. Here we present a systematic study in a significant number of protein families, testing the statistical meaning of the Tree-determinant residues predicted by three different methods that represent the range of available approaches. The first method takes as a starting point a phylogenetic representation of a protein family and, following the principle of Relative Entropy from Information Theory, automatically searches for the optimal division of the family int
First Multiplatform Application for Pharmacies in Spain, Which Guides the Prescription of Probiotics According to Pathology
[Abstract]
The study of the intestinal microbiota is one of the biggest challenges in the current clinical environment. In this context, probiotics have been a focus of interest to achieve the stability of the intestinal microbiota, due to probiotics’ key role in its regulation. The development of an automated system that allows practitioners to easily search for the optimal probiotic is the main objective of this study. Although it is true that there have been previous attempts of applications with this purpose, only authorized probiotics available in the countries of origin, Canada and the USA, were included. This event was a limitation when looking for those endorsed in other countries such as Spain. Thus, a system has been developed from free and multiplatform technologies that allow its use without any cost, finding, in a simple way, those probiotics that would be ideal for each pathology, either from a browser or from a cell phone. This work was supported by the “Collaborative Project in Genomic Data Integration (CICLOGEN)” PI17/01826 funded by the Carlos III Health Institute from the Spanish National plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation 2013–2016, the European Regional Development Funds (ERDF)—“A way to build Europe.”, the General Directorate of Culture, Education and University Management of Xunta de Galicia (Ref. Probiotic: First Prescriptive Application of Probiotics in Spain
[Abstract]
The study of the intestinal microbiota is one of the greatest challenges in today’s clinical environment. Thus, probiotics have been established as a focus for its stability, as they play a key role in its regulation. The development of an automated technique that allows the practitioners the smooth search for the optimal probiotic is postulated as the main objective of this study. Despite the existence of previous attempts at applications for this purpose, they have only been carried out for the countries of origin, preventing them from being used in others such as Spain. Therefore, a system has been developed with open, multi-platform, and free technologies, which manages to locate the optimal probiotic for each pathology.Xunta de Galicia; ED431G/01Xunta de Galicia; ED431D 2017/16Xunta de Galicia; ED431D 2017/2
A bibliometric study on advertising research in Spain: themes, researchers, networks and centers of production (1980-2015)
This article addresses Spanish scientific production on advertising, starting with a bibliometric analysis of the articles published in Spanish communication scientific journals between 1980 and 2015, using a sample of 1,050 articles from 80 journals. The scientific production was characterized formally and thematically along with the authors and production centers, and the research networks were identified as well. The results showed that there was positive evolution of research on advertising from a quantitative point of view, although they also confirmed some problems that question its maturity: the scarce internationalization, the low level of scientific collaboration and the absence of a cohesive research network. Although the study did take into account the entire body of research on advertising, it focused on the publication patterns of scientific articles -the main channel of dissemination of science today-, and contributed to a greater understanding of the advertising research map in Spain in the last four decades.Ciencias de la Comunicació
Historical evolution of advertising research in Spain: from the scientific origins of advertising to the current research boom
Scientific research on the advertising phenomenon in Spain dates back to the early 20th century and it was
first sponsored by Prat Gaballí and the Catalan Publi-Club. However, it is not until the decade of the sixties
that we can talk about the takeoff of the scientific study on advertising. In the 21st century, the
proliferation of centers that provide teaching in advertising studies, the increase in the number of
researchers and the need for research as a requirement to achieve academic promotion have contributed to
the growth in advertising research. This study is aimed to know how the research on advertising in Spain
has evolved historically. To that end, a historical approach is first used to analyse the origins of scientific
research on advertising both internationally and in Spain. Additionally, we perform a bibliometric analysis
on the scientific production in Spain. We show that, despite the early attempts to scientifically base the
advertising discipline, its consolidation happened during the last decades of the 20th century, with two
milestones in time: early nineties and the beginning of the following century. This article is part of a
broader project on advertising research in Spain, carried out by the authors during the last years. We are
analysing, for the first time, the results focusing on the temporal evolution of the object of study. The main
results, structured in seven quinquennia, represent a new advance in the knowledge of advertising research
in our country, this time under a historical perspective.Ciencias de la Comunicació
